Apr16Is there a beef between the two ladies brewing? Its fair for us to start off the read with a history on Cardi. She didn’t just pop up ,shortie was definitely paying her dues. Born Belcalis Almanzar on October 11, 1992, in The Bronx borough of New York City cardi was raised in the Highbridge neighborhood of the South Bronx. She was born to a Dominican father and Trinidadian mother. With a melting pot of Caribbean influence mixed with that New York state of mind , definitely she had a musical seed planted from early. The world got introduced to her via one of the most well known series VH1’s Love and Hip Hop. She stood out from the other cast members when she came on with this comedic persona that kept it so real that one couldn’t help to laugh at her realness. This certainly was the hallmark of what was to be a huge history making career. We make mention as it is a part of her history that she was a stripper, not in any disrespect to her as there is a line drawn where as its not a crime for a female to be one but with a clear side note that it doesn’t give any man the authority to use or take advantage of a woman that is one nor does it define a female . She ended up being put out her mom’s house at an early age and decided to go that route and used monies made to foster the beginnings of her music career. Cardi had a string of hit singles from her two albums Gangsta Bitch Music vol 1 and 2 and her persona led her simultaneously to have a huge amount of followers on Instagram which propelled her fame to heights never seen before for an up and coming newbie. With the release of Bodak yellow, this made history for the first female rapper to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 after 14 years of Lauren Hill doing it. This marks only the second time in history that a female rapper has topped the charts unaccompanied. Fast forward after a string of tv appearances and interviews all over the world she was proposed to by offset from super rap group the migos and eventually announced being pregnant on SNL . A couple months prior she released a single ‘motorsport’ with fellow female rapper Nicki Minaj. There were rumors going that nicki had missed the video shoot to be spiteful towards cardi for things said in interviews. Now where credit is due we must give Nicki a salute as probably the most successful female rapper ever that really can spit bars and she felt that cardi should have been more mindful in her interviews and give more respect. Charlamagne the god from hot 97 is one of the most influencial radio show hosts that felt that there was bad blood coming from Nicki to Cardi and with nicki releasing two new tracks around the same time as cardi’s new album ‘Invasion of Privacy’ it was a sign to show the she was back to reclaim her throne after 4 years of absence. Nicki did an interview on Beats 1 radio https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGYmH_FMaNIwhere she expressed emotionally to a point of tears that she felt hurt with cardi not showing “genuine love” for her . Her two new tracks Chun Li and Barbi Tingz were critiqued by the breakfast club https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glPQ6qD9GcA and as in the rap game , the media tends to pit artists against each other either directly or subliminally as such is the culture of hip hop. Cardi is certainly on a wave made maybe partly thru good self marketing, good timing and that all around Cinderella story that everyone seems to love about her and nicki has also certainly paid her dues and is back with hard lyric flows and a club banger stating she is “king kong” in this. Worl-a-music has been following to entire series of events and will be giving updates as the year progresses. Best wishes to both artists as unity for females in what once was a male dominated industry should be the priority for media and movers and shakers in the industry.
She’s the first black woman to headline Coachella, she sang Lift Every Voice. She walked out like a damn drum major, she had a step show and gave props to the divine 9, she gave us Afro latino, Caribbean beats, go-go, trap music, rock, operatic vocals, even chopped and screwed. She said I’m gon sing Drunk in Love on a crane and did! She played patty cake with Solange, she reunited with Destiny’s Child and Michelle Crip Walked. She swag surfed with an HBCU band!!!! She had Shawn Corey Carter come out and I can’t think of a more accomplished black rapper who somehow has stayed relevant when he puts out music. She had majorettes, she had samples of Fela Kuti and Nina Simone. You can hear Malcolm X voice talk about the most disrespected and least protected person in the world Black women, she’s unapologetically BLACK! She had fat black women dancing front and center, bitch did you see that thick girl twirling that baton?! You can hear Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie speak on feminism. LES TWINS showed the fuck out! She gave us Stamina, Vocals, changed 5 times, and only had 3 sips of water. You could see Rihanna front row center getting her whole life because black women support each other. She never slipped was never outta breath. Who else you know can change nail polish during a costume change?! She is one of the best performers in history. You can’t name a better performer alive and she will be (and is) as iconic as Michael Joseph Jackson. She honestly doesn’t have to give us anything else after this performance but you know she is…..Written by: Aj Mims
